Richard Gere, the famous Hollywood actor, has given his opinion on the conflict between the Spanish and Catalan governments with a strong rejection of the police violence during the 1st October referendum. "I reject violence being used to solve any problem", said Gere in an interview with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

During the conversation, the actor also says that it has to be the Spanish government which makes a proposal to the Catalan executive, because the first is the most powerful. "I believe that, in any discussion, the most powerful is the one obliged to make the offer", said Gere, who added that he hasn't yet formed an opinion over the Catalan question but that "they're telling [him] about it" and that his "alliances are changing".

Nonetheless, Gere says he at least understands the cause of the conflict. "I'm not well enough informed. But I know that it is to do with history, culture and language", says the actor, who demonstrates a knowledge of some of the problems confronting the executives, although without mentioning the question of independence.
