The secretary general of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and auxiliary bishop of Valladolid, Luis Argüello, has said he is "worried" that Catalan bishops have paid visits to the pro-independence political prisoners. Argüello argues that these prisoners are accused of "serious crimes relating to breaches of Catalonia's Statute of Autonomy and the constitutional legality", and has asked the bishops to "also visit other inmates" of the prisons.

These statements were made by Bishop Argüello in an interview with the Efe agency. In addition to his statements about the political prisoners, the bishop discussed other issues.

He assured that the Spanish catholic church will investigate cases of sexual abuse within the church "if the Pope is disposed for that to take place," and claimed that in Spain there have not been many cases of abuse, and that there are victims who want to "forget about what happened".

Also in the interview, he asserted that secondary school classes in Religion should count for final examination grades. As well, he reaffirmed the need for homosexuals to be excluded from the priesthood.
