The mayor of the Catalan city of Badalona, Àlex Pastor, has resigned from his post after being caught by police driving in breach of lockdown and allegedly under the infuence of alcohol, in a heated incident in which the politician is said to have bitten a police officer.

The incident took place on Tuesday night. Pastor, a member of the Catalan Socialist party (PSC), was stopped by Mossos d'Esquadra police for driving erratically in Barcelona's Eixample district. He refused to take an alcohol test and became aggressive. Sources close to the case confirmed to ElNacional.cat that the mayor went as far as biting a Mossos agent, for which he is accused of an attack against an authority.

The PSC, Catalan political associates of Pedro Sánchez's PSOE party, stripped Pastor of his party membership on Tuesday night and the Badalona mayor resigned from his post at the head of Catalonia's fourth largest city, via his lawyer, on Wednesday morning. Pastor had been mayor of the coastal city close to Barcelona since June 2018.
