Two rival Spanish nationalist groups fought a pitched battle today outside the famous Zurich Café in Barcelona's Plaça Catalunya. They completely destroyed the café's outdoor terrace. The conflict occurred at the end of the unionist demonstration to celebrate Spain's October 12th national holiday. Twenty-five people have been identified by the police and one agent of the Barcelona city police agent was injured.

Following the violent incident, the Catalan Mossos police force opened an investigation into the fight, which began about 12 noon. It seems to have been a disagreement between two extreme-right groups, but some sources suggest that those fighting were extremist supporters of Atletico de Madrid and Valencia football clubs.

During the battle, tables, chairs, and sun umbrellas were used as missiles, and one of Café Zurich's windows was broken. Café staff decided to close the bar and shut themselves inside. Some of the radicals involved carried telescopic batons.

Police officer injured

An agent of Barcelona's city police was slightly injured when he tried to break up the fight. The officer received heavy bruising.
