And more people keep popping up, saying one atrocity after another. If a decency detector existed, it would shatter. Into a million pieces. And they lie. They lie a lot. Blatantly. Grotesquely. And they manipulate. A lot. In broad daylight and in front of microphones and cameras. And they do it in full knowledge that we know that they know that we know that they are manipulating. But they don't care. Because it never matters here. Because in Spain, cynicism is cheap.
There are “The Good” and “The Bad” here. And “The Good” can send 9 people to jail for months without trial, inventing the facts and crimes. Why? Because the other ones are “The Bad”. And you imprison “The Bad” and shout “go get them, olé” at them. And it doesn't matter. And if “The Bad” protest, they get sent the employees of the month to insult them, whether them being journalists or politicians. And they are called coup-plotters, Nazis, thugs, society-breakers, and now... terrorists! Apparently this terrorist thing was on offer this week, with a small side order of chips.
The current Spain is a state where if your doorbell rings at six o’clock in the morning you can be certain of three things: 1. It's not the milkman. 2. They are the heirs of those who inspired the “what do these people want calling round at dawn”. And 3. There is a 99% probability that, long before those who are not the milkman, a few TV cameras will arrive on your doorstep, courtesy of the Vicepresidentpress (concept).
In the current Spain, if you protest with any effect on traffic, you end up accused of terrorism and tagged a “cell” by Albert Rivera. On what evidence? Well, look, at this point in the film, do we really have to bother finding evidence? Oh, come on, let's not mess about... “Evidence? What for? To screw it all up?”
But nothing ever matters here. It won’t matter if, for example, this report from lawyers for Tamara G.C., the member of the CDR arrested on accusations of terrorism, is proved true.
Spain is in the hands of 200 families which, for 100 years, have held all the main truly powerful positions. The justice system, the police, the diplomatic corps, senior officials, etc. Scratch the surface a little and it becomes clear that they're all sons, daughters, wives, aunts, nephews, cousins or in-laws of someone already in power somewhere when trains ran on steam. And they all attend the same schools, they are all best mates, and they all marry each other. And their children will attend the same schools to continue the cycle.
And when those currently in power finally leave, which will happen sooner or later, they will be replaced with others just like them. And they will be their sons, daughters, wives, aunts, nephews, cousins or in-laws, and they will pretend to be scandalised by everything that is taking place now. But nothing will happen. The same way nothing happened to Aznar. Do you remember? In that famous interview with Ernesto Sanz de Buruaga in January 2003 on Antena 3 TV he said: “You, and all the people who are watching us, can rest assured that I am telling the truth. The Iraq regime does have weapons of mass destruction.” Four years later, once the whole galaxy was aware of his lies, he said: “Now I know there aren’t any weapons of mass destruction. The problem was that I wasn’t smart enough to have known it before.” And no, he wasn’t even gracious enough to apologise. And you, and I, helped finance his little FAES think tank shop, from where he still has the nerve to give us moral lessons. 26 million euros (£22 million, $32 million) he received between 2006 and 2016. 26 MILLION EUROS in public subsidies. The one who lied to us in order to kill innocent people. And has anything happened? No!
Because nothing ever matters here.
