The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has released an official statement (in English) accepting president Carles Puigdemont's visit to the country this Sunday and allowing him to make speeches freely "with due respect for the Swiss legal system".

Switzerland notes that Puigdemont "is entitled to travel freely within the Schengen area" and that his trip to the country "is governed by Swiss law and the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons".

The statement adds that it is a private visit in response to an invitation from the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH). They say he will "make several public appearances during his stay in Switzerland".

The ministry avoids giving an opinion on the political situation in Catalonia. They say it's an internal Spanish matter, which "should be handled within the framework of the Spanish constitutional order". They do, however, say that "Swiss and Spanish authorities are in contact", without going into more details.

They conclude saying that they would take measures in the hypothetical case "disruptions of public order" are seen.
