With the clock ticking down to invest a new prime minister before Spain would automatically go to a re-run general election, the official body Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) has today published a new national survey on voting intention. In terms of direct reported results, PSOE comes first on 29.7%, followed by PP on 11.6%. Behind them come Unidas Podemos on 8.9%, Ciudadanos on 7.4% and Vox on 3.3%.

Today's initial results included no weighted results. It should also be noted that the fieldwork was carried out following May's local and autonomous community elections, but before the failed investiture of Pedro Sánchez as prime minister and the subsequent negotiations, so far fruitless.

In comparison to the previous barometer, this shows a slight fall for PSOE and a slight uptick for PP. Catalan parties ERC and JxCat remain at roughly the levels they were at in April's election.

Investiture negotiations

Also today, it was announced the king, Felipe VI, will have another round of talks with the different political parties next Monday and Tuesday to gauge the possibilities of an investiture. It is up to the king to propose the name of someone with a reasonable chance of success for a debate and vote in the Congress. If no candidate is successful before 23rd September, another general election will be automatically called for 10th November.

Acting deputy prime minister, Carmen Calvo, said that Sánchez will tell the king he won't go ahead with attempting an investiture if he doesn't have the necessary votes guaranteed in advance. To do otherwise, she said, would be to put the public through a "frustrating situation". For the moment, talks between PSOE and Unidas Podemos appear stalled again.
