The political consequences of the ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union have been almost immediate: Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín were today able to collect provisional accreditation as MEPs. So far, the Spanish government has broadly avoided the topic, saying it's a matter for the courts. That said, today, acting spokesminister Isabel Celaá wanted to emphasise that their accreditation is "temporary" and that, in any case, they will still have "issues pending with the Spanish justice system".

Asked about Puigdemont's accreditation today, she also noted that the president of the European Parliament has asked the chamber's legal services to analyse the ruling. "We're waiting," she said, calling for "legal questions to be left in the legal area".

In response to another question on the issue, Celaá said that nothing has changed. She noted: "For the Spanish justice system, and in general, Puigdemont has issues pending, which he will have to face." "As such, we continue as before," she concluded.
