A judge has ordered the website for the 1st October Catalan independence referendum (www.referendum.cat) to be taken offline this Wednesday afternoon. The Civil Guard delivered the order by hand, police sources have told El Nacional, directly to the hosting company, CDmon, in Malgrat de Mar, a seaside town about 65km north-east of Barcelona.

Trying to open the original website has now for some time returned an error message. The Catalan government has now duplicated the website at a new address: www.ref1oct.cat (English version available)

The order came from Barcelona's Court of Instruction number 13, the court which is taking all the legal steps investigating the referendum. This was the court for which the Civil Guard interrogated a number of Catalan government public officials about the referendum preparations.
