Before returning to prison on Saturday evening, Cuixart spoke to Marcel Mauri, vice-president of the pro-independence Omnium association. Said Mauri in a tweet: "Jordi reminded me that there are 3 million political prisoners in the world, and that we are fortunate enough to be able to continue to fight for freedom," he said.

"A farewell hug, always too brief, after 48h leave (don't call it freedom). He reminds me that there are 3 million political prisoners in the world. And we are fortunate enough to be able to continue to fight for freedom. The only struggle lost is the one that is abandoned. Onrward @jcuixart!"—Marcel Mauri de los Rios

Cuixart has now served a quarter of the nine-year prison sentence imposed on him by Spain's Supreme Court arising from the Catalan independence referendum in October 2017. Omnium sources explained that he had intended to spend the leave "with his family" and therefore made no public appearances.
