Dozens of people have protested in front of the gates of Neumünster prison in Germany in support of Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, being held there whilst Germany considers the extradition warrant issued against him by Spanish Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena over alleged crimes of rebellion and misuse of public funds.

Protesters waved "starred" pro-independence estelada flags and hung messages of support on the prison fence reading "Freiheit", "freedom" in German. They also sang Els Segadors, the Catalan anthem, and shouted "Long live Catalonia", "Long live the president" and "You're not alone". Taking advantage of the protest, organised by ANC (Catalan National Assembly) and CDR (Committees for the Defence of the Republic), supporters delivered dozens of letters to the imprisoned president.

Demonstrations around the country

This isn't the only protest to take place today, as ANC and CDR have also organised events in Munich, Bremen and Karlsruhe. They will be the prelude to tomorrow's demonstrations in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

Whilst protesters were showing their support outside the prison, the team managing the president's social media accounts sent a message via Twitter which started: "Let everyone be clear: I won't give in, I won't give up, I won't retreat".

Puigdemont has been in prison since last Sunday when he was taken into custody shortly after crossing the Danish border, a local court deciding he posed a flight risk whilst the European Arrest Warrant against him was under consideration. Public prosecutors in Schleswig-Holstein hope to present a decision on requesting extradition or not to the state court on Tuesday.
