In the coronavirus update given by the Spanish health ministry this Friday, 333 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed, the largest number of new cases reported in a single day over the last month - and in fact the figures for the last three days - 257, 241 and 333 new cases respectively - are the three highest single day totals since May. Catalonia has once again led the number of new infections, with 81, a trend that has been consolidated this week. It is followed by Aragón, the other autonomous community which stands out in the rankings at Spanish level, with 68; Andalusia had 32 and Madrid, 30. The official Spanish figures register 253,908 people as having been infected with the new coronavirus over the whole course of the pandemic.

In addition, the Spanish ministry headed by Salvador Illa reported two more deaths than yesterday and 10 in the last week. The total death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at 28,403.

There have been 11,710 intensive care admissions for Covid-19 across Spain since the pandemic began. Of eight new admissions in the last seven days, five have been in Catalonia.

The data for Lleida

In particular, new infections have been highly concentrated in the Lleida health area in western Catalonia, where 338 new positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Catalan health ministry's daily count this Friday. The county of Segrià, the area in perimetral lockdown since Saturday 4th July has registered 280 confirmed cases since Monday. Catalan ministry sources assure that this increase "is to be expected", because the impact of the measures implemented will take between 10 and 15 days to be seen.
