Easter Monday, April 13th. A holiday in Catalonia, while most of the Spanish state begins a new working week - and for the first time in two weeks, many are actually going to work under the eased lockdown restrictions. Meanwhile the daily death tolls from coronavirus and numbers of new cases in Spain and Catalonia have also eased in the last 24 hours. In Spain, 517 deaths, in Catalonia, 96; with 3,477 new cases detected in Spain and 699 in Catalonia.
In percentage terms all of these figures imply increases of 2-3% on the previous day's accumulated total. Which sounds good although, of course, there is nothing good about 517 people dying. In total, 17,489 have died from the virus in Spain according to the official figures, third in the world behind the United States (22,109) and Italy (19,899), although Spain has more detected cases overall than Italy (169,496 versus 156,363). A breakdown of the Spanish figures shows 34,726 cases detected in Catalonia, the second largest number within the Spanish state after the Madrid region (47,146).
In the Catalan health ministry's count of cases and deaths among elderly people in residential care, 3,659 people who live in these homes has been diagnosed with coronavirus up till April 11th (an increase of 284 on the previous days figure), based on figures provided by the centres themselves, which may overlap with the figures in the official health ministry list. A total of 1,825 residents of these centres have died of coronavirus, an increase of 162 on yesterday's figure, although deaths of residents that occurred in hospitals will also be counted on the other list.
