The Catalan Council for the Republic has this Monday surpassed 25,000 sign ups. The open public register was announced by president Carles Puigdemont last Tuesday during the ceremony presenting the council.
The total is given by the counter on the council's website, where people interested can also sign up for a donation of at least 10 euros "for actions of the Republic".
The register, Puigdemont said during his speech by video link from Belgium during last Tuesday's ceremony in the Catalan government palace, is so that the public can "take part in the construction of the Republic through their active commitment".
The Council for the Republic is a private body registered in Belgium which will be dedicated to promoting the independence cause internationally. Despite having links to the current Catalan government, its promoters say it will act independently.
