Amnesty International has released a statement against the banning of an event planned for this Sunday by the group "People of Madrid for the right to decide". The event was to take place this Sunday in the municipal cultural centre Matadero. The international group says that it's a "disproportionate restriction" of the right to freedom of expression. In their opinion it violates international law.

"In accordance with the international law of human rights, when dealing with an event intimately linked with the right to freedom of expression, which constitutes one of the fundamental principles of a democratic society and which is of vital importance for the full enjoyment of other human rights, any restriction wished to be placed upon the exercise can only be admissible if three conditions are met simultaneously: It must be expressly fixed in law (which in turn must be formulated with enough precision so that people can regulate their behaviour as a result. It must be demonstrably necessary and proportionate to protect specific public interests or the right or reputation of other people. And it has to be certain that the measure is necessary for the protection of national security, public order or public health or morals," they write.

Amnesty International continues to state that these conditions are not met in the case of the conference in favour of the right to decide in Madrid.
