The success of the Catalan Dragons has jumped the French border, crossing from northern to southern Catalonia in festive mood, at the same time as it also prompted festivities in England. The Perpinyà-based team have become the first non-English winners of Rugby League's premier knock-out trophy, the Challenge Cup, and were received like heroes when they arrived home.

Moreover, the Perpinyà airport was filled with a rousing rendition of the Catalan national anthem Els Segadors to greet the newly-crowned champions on arrival.

But the party, which had kicked off at the scene of their triumph in Wembley stadium, then continued at home. Time to celebrate and enjoy the title. Some with traditional Catalan barretines on their heads, some with senyera flags round their necks, and no shortage of high spirits.

No less than what such an historical sporting moment calls for. For the first time since the inaugural Challenge Cup competition in 1897, the Rugby League trophy has a home outside the UK: in the Catalan Dragons' trophy cabinet in Perpinyà.
