It had seemed that the saga was over: Antoine Griezmann had moved to Barça and that was that. But now it appears there's at least one chapter left to come. Atlético de Madrid is angry with the Catalan club over the details of the transfer and so has called for the French player to be blocked from getting a license to play in La Liga.

Before 1st July, Griezmann's release clause was worth 200 million euros (£180 million; $220 million). Barcelona, however, only formally signed him almost a fortnight later, once it had dropped to 120 million. Atletico, in turn, claim that discussions between the player and the club must have borne fruit before that date however, and that as such they should be paid the original amount.

La Liga's president, Javier Tebas, has now confirmed to radio station Onda Cero that Atlético has called for him to block Griezmann's license. "[The club] filed a document and put into doubt whether we should give Barça Griezmann's license," he said. He added that the league has "the ability to block the signing of a player".

As for what might happen next, Tebas was reluctant to speculate, saying the relevant "mechanism has been put into action" and it's now up to the relevant bodies to reach a conclusion. He wouldn't offer a personal evaluation of the situation.

As it happens, Griezmann has already appeared in a Barça shirt, playing in the club's defeat in a 2-1 friendly against Chelsea in Japan yesterday.
