An imaginative poll has asked Spanish voters to choose the best president "for their country" from a shortlist of two: either the leader of Spain's far right Vox party, Santiago Abascal, or Catalonia's president in exile, Carles Puigdemont.

The results of the 1500-interview poll by the Electomania polling agency were classified according to Spain's autonomous communities, thus creating a new map of "Two Spains". The part of the Spanish state which would prefer to be governed by pro-independence Puigdemont, and the part which would be happier under extreme right leader Abascal.

The breakdown by autonomous communities: Puigdemont wins in the periphery of the Spanish state: Catalonia, Valencian Country, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, Navarra, Asturias, Galicia and the Canary Islands. That is, the areas of Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalities, and a few others around the edges of the state.

Abascal, on the other hand, prevails in the vast centre: in Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla León, La Rioja, Cantabria, Murcia, Madrid, Extremadura and Andalusia.

According to the poll, two out of three voters for the Spanish Socialists (PSOE) would vote for the Catalan pro-independence leader, Carles Puigdemont, ahead of Vox's Santiago Abascal.

Voters of the left wing Unidas Podemos (UP) favoured Puigdemont massively, while supporters of Ciudadanos (Cs), known for its strong pro-Spanish union line, preferred Abascal.
