New Yorkers have been called to stand up for civil, political and human rights in Catalonia. A coalition of 'Big Apple' residents known as the New York Coalition for Human Rights in Catalonia, is asking their fellow citizens to rally on 9th December to demand the release of Catalan political prisoners, and insist on respect for Catalans' rights. The protest, which is backed by the major pro-independence group Catalan National Assembly (ANC), will be held in the city's Washington Square Park, in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood.

The organizers of the event have created a poster showing an image of the police repression against the Catalan independence referendum on 1st October.

The New York Coalition for Human Rights in Catalonia describes itself as "a coalition of journalists, translators, Human Rights workers, lawyers, researchers and artists based in NYC that are deeply concerned with the current situation of repression in Catalonia". The group was formed in October this year to "respond to the repeated violations of Human Rights that the Spanish Government has carried out against Catalonia".
