The broad Avinguda Diagonal was chock-full for the full 6 kilometre length of the rally, on a day dominated by chants for independence, for the implementation of the Catalan Republic, and for calls for the release of the Catalan political prisoners and the return of political leaders in exile.
Chants of "independence" and "freedom for political prisoners" boomed out along the Barcelona avenue. After Catalan actor Toni Albà, acting as MC, brought the massive crowd to silence, a million-voice soundwave echoed up the Diagonal, as marchers called for "independence".
