The mayors of the great world capitals have sent messages of solidarity to Barcelona, which this Saturday will hold a large demonstration to condemn last week's attacks which left 15 dead and more than 120 injured. The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, praised the "strength" the people of Barcelona are showing in the face of the terrorist attacks and said that his city stands alongside the Catalan capital.

Messages of support have also come from Paris. The mayor, Anne Hidalgo, noted that Paris, like Barcelona, had been hit by terrorism and highlighted that they are both cities "of peace, energetic, cosmopolitan towns". "Barcelona has within herself all the strength to be able to not just resist, but to continue spreading this message, this beautiful message of tolerance... to say that terrorism will not be accepted, that we're still standing and that Paris is today standing with you."

From London, the city's mayor, Sadiq Khan, has assured Barcelona that London stands with them and warned that those who look to sow fear and division with cowardly violence will not succeed.

The mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, also wanted to communicate a message of support to Barcelona and to strongly reject violence. "All the citizens of Madrid are with you," she said.

The mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, posted his own message of solidarity to his Twitter account.

The mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, also showed his support for Barcelona and, with the hashtag #Citiesforpeace said that we're stronger together.
