Updated list of municipalities and map (in our Catalan articles)

More than 650 mayors from all over Catalonia have already committed themselves to the 1st October independence referendum and have signed a decree to represent their collaboration with the Catalan government.

The signed document is a visual demonstration of the political commitment of the municipalities with the referendum and was driven by the ACM (Catalan Association of Municipalities) and AMI (Association of Municipalities for Independence).

At the same time, the Catalan government is continuing with the preparations for the referendum and has been in contact with the municipalities proposing premises for the polling stations as in any other vote.

Communication of the government

The signing is in response to the message, signed by Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and vice-president Oriol Junqueras, which informed the local councils that they will have to put the premises they usually use as voting centres at the disposition of the government's electoral administration.

The two highest-ranking officials of the Catalan executive wrote to the mayors that their government "will count on the premises normally used in your municipality as voting centres", more specifically, the centres used for the 2015 Catalan parliament elections.

The councils had 48 hours to communicate any change there might be in relation to the centres.

Warning from Spain

At the same time, Spain's Ministry of Presidency wrote a letter to the secretaries and municipal auditors urging the councils to not take part in the organisation and conduct of the referendum, whilst reminding them that the Constitutional Court "has expressly prohibited the continuation of the so-called constituent process in Catalonia and any preparatory act for the referendum".

The letter going on to remark that the Catalan government "is ignoring" the ban and asked the councils to not take part in an "unconstitutional and illegal" process, for which reason it alerts the municipal councils that the Constitutional Court requires them to "ignore the demand" from the Catalan government to take part in the preparation of the 1st October referendum "to attack against the law and the Court's resolutions".
