The Catalan government says 26,000 volunteers have already registered for the organisation of the independence referendum planned for 1st October, while more than 650 municipalities have signed support for the decree calling the referendum agreed this Wednesday.

In statements to Spanish radio station Ser, the minister for the Presidency and government spokesperson, Jordi Turull, explained that, as in any election process, the independence vote on 1st October wouldn't force any civil servant to take part in the organisation, rather that it would be entrusted to volunteers.

As for polling stations, Turull clarified that these would be set up as in any normal election, and that members of the public will receive a notification if it falls to them to run one.

Asked about the role of the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police, the minister said again that, as in any normal election day, they'll monitor events to make sure everything runs with "absolute normality" and to "guarantee" the safety of the public.
