The president of Catalonia, Quim Torra, has said in an interview with Flemish public television that the best solution for the Iberian peninsula would be to have two new states: republics of Spain and Catalonia.

The comments come the day after the president met with his Flemish counterpartGeert Bourgeois, who expressed his deep concern over the existence of Catalan political prisoners and exiles.

"Our project, what our voters voted for, is independence. We believe that the best solution for the Iberian peninsula is for, besides Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra, there to be two more states: the republic of Spain and the republic of Catalonia," the president said.

Torra explains that, in the meeting he held last week with Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez, they were able to negotiate, but he expressed regret that they couldn't agree on either the right to self-determination, nor the political prisoners.
