British newspaper The Times (paywall) has warned that the Spanish government wants to "overturn" Catalan as first language with its attempt to modify the educational model in Catalonia.

According to the newspaper a "row" has broken out between the Spanish and Catalan governments over the central government's proposal to use article 155 to give parents a choice between having their children taught in Spanish or Catalan.

The note the context of the "the conservative Spanish government" being "at loggerheads" for months with the Catalan government over the independence movement. "It now says it may use the failure of the separatists to form a regional government to reverse a policy that makes Catalan the dominant language in state schools," reports the paper.
