Spanish government spokesperson, Isabell Celaá, has said that her government supports the proposal to stop changing clocks in spring and autumn in the EU. This Friday morning, the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has announced he will propose the measure for approval by the Parliament and the Council.

Celaá said that the proposal "is in line with what those of us who are in the government have called and argued for for years".

Although its latitude would suggest Spain should be in the same time zone as the United Kingdom and Ireland, it has in fact been an hour ahead since 1942 when the dictator Franco changed it to match Germany. The idea of changing back has been a hot topic in Spain in recent years, but hasn't yet ended up happening.

Under the proposal, each country would be able to decide which time zone it wants to stay in. The Spanish foreign minister, Josep Borrell, hasn't discounted Spain returning to a time zone in line with its latitude.
