The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has called for "calm" via Twitter after the Catalan proclamation of independence. "The rule of law will restore the law in Catalonia", he said. Rajoy was responding almost instantly to the vote in the Catalan Parliament, in the same tone as his speech to the Senate this morning, in which he said that the application of article 155 of the Spanish Constitution would serve to stop the independence process.
