The Catalan president in exile, Carles Puigdemont, has returned to the European Parliament this Friday. Just minutes away across Brussels, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez was at the European Council meeting. Alongside Sánchez was foreign minister Josep Borrell.
The head of Puigdemont's office, Josep Lluís Alay, commented on the situation in a tweet, noting that Puigdemont was at the Parliament "as a free citizen of the world (except Spain)".

Puigdemont was invited by a Flemish MEP to the opening of a conference on sign languages and their different statuses in Flanders and Catalonia.
