The governing bureau of Spain's Congress, with the votes of PP, PSOE and Ciudadanos, has this Tuesday rejected to process the proposal for an investigating commission submitted at the end of July by Unidos Podemos, ERC , PDeCAT and other smaller parties. They wanted a commission to look into alleged irregular activities by king Juan Carlos I, claimed in a conversation recorded between former police officer José Manuel Villarejo and Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, a friend of the monarch.

In the conversation, recorded by Villarejo, she claims he had accounts in Switzerland where he held money earned in commissions. The police officer is currently in pretrial detention facing charges of criminal organisation, bribery and money laundering.

The Congress' bureau examined the proposal today, before voting to reject it. PP, PSOE and Cs argued that it would be unconstitutional as the legislature has no powers to control the head of state.

Support

The federal coordinator of IU, Alberto Garzón, launched the idea of the commission in July. Later, deputies Rafael Mayoral (Podemos) and Joan Mena (En Comú), invited other parties to add their support; ERC, PDeCAT, Compromís and EH Bildu responded positively. The proposal was presented with the support of 90 deputies.
