The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has made a call for dialogue to the Spanish state this Friday. Asked about the 1st October Catalan referendum in a press conference after the summit between heads of state and government in Tallinn, Estonia, Macron asked for "serenity" but also expressed his confidence in Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy. "I have confidence in his determination to defend the interests of all of Spain," he said.

The French leader said that his country has a "partner" in Spain, their "only" interlocutor around the table in the European Council. "He manages as well as possible Spain's internal affairs," he said. "My principle is simple, we cannot give lessons between member-states", he replied to a question about whether he had a message for the Spanish or Catalan government. "Dialogue and serenity are always needed in a country's political life," he added.
