The European Commission has again supported the Spanish state when asked about the situation of Catalan president Carles Puigdemont. The first Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, has today said that if Puigdemont "violates" the law, he has to "face the consequences".

"All citizens, be they from Catalonia or from other parts of Spain, are subject to the law and protected by the law and, if they break the law, they have to face the consequences", said Timmermans in a press conference after he was asked about Puigdemont and the situation of human rights in Spain.

The European body, therefore, again put itself on the side of the Spanish state and said that "the European Commission, in terms of human rights, has no reason to criticise the Spanish system".
