A group of Catalans demonstrated this afternoon on Whitehall, the heart of the UK government, opposite Downing Street, asking Theresa May's government to give their support to the Catalan independence referendum on 1st October. Those gathered, who held Catalan and pro-independence "estelada" flags, bore a banner reading "Referendum for Catalonia. Defending Catalan democratic institutions". The event was organised by the London branch of the pro-independence organisation ANC (Catalan National Assembly).

The demonstrators left a ballot box in a cage on the pavement to symbolise the Spanish government's attacks attempting to prevent the vote.
