The trial of Catalan pro-independence leaders is due to start in the coming days, and Spain’s attorney general says there’s no need for international observers. The jailed leaders don’t trust the Supreme Court to give them a fair trial, and organizations such as Amnesty International had requested to act as observers. But the senior prosecutor maintains Spain is respectful towards the guarantees of everyone. Meanwhile, negotiations to pass Catalonia’s 2019 budget have been suspended. The government needs the votes of a left-wing party standing in-between the pro-independence and unionist blocks but they broke talks today, claiming they don’t know yet where the money will come from.
