The prime minister of Belgium, Charles Michel, has released a statement (in French) saying that Catalan president Carles Puigdemont "has the same rights and duties" as any other European citizen, "no more, no less". He also denies that Puigdemont is in Brussels by "invitation or initiative of the Belgian government".

"According to Mr Puigdemont's own words, he's come to Brussels because it's the capital of Europe. He will be treated as any other European citizen," reads the statement.

Michel, in fact, once again calls for "political dialogue in Spain to resolve a political crisis within national and international order". The Belgian prime minister also said that he will maintain "regular diplomatic contacts" with the Spanish government in the framework of "the current circumstances".
