The terrorists that today ran over a hundred people on the Rambla in Barcelona intended to cause an even more terrible massacre at the heart of the Catalan capital. They're related to the explosion yesterday in Alcanar, in the south of Catalonia. The news has taken everyone by surprise, and shows the magnitude the attack would have had if the van had been loaded with explosives, which is what was apparently planned and being prepared in Alcanar.

One person inside the house at the time died in the explosion. According to the chief of the Mossos, the Catalan police, Josep Lluís Trapero, it's directly related to preparations for this Thursday's attack on the Rambla. "The connection is very clear, there are very few doubts."

In the resulting attack, 13 people died and more than 100 injured, some of them seriously and the majority were hospitalised. Two people have been arrested, one from the Alcanar cell, and another that police identified at a checkpoint in Ripoll in the north of Catalonia.

As soon as the terrorist got out of the van, the antiterrorist apparatus of the whole of Catalonia was activated. The suspect in Alcanar was detained five hours later.

A crisis meeting was held at the Catalan Interior Ministry, from where the police actions were monitored.
