Traditions and history in the photos of Sitges Carnival 2023

The beautiful, coastal city of Sitges is less than an hour away from the city of Barcelona, making it the perfect setting for a Mediterranean, beach-side parade. The city of Sitges is fairly small with just under 30 thousand inhabitants, but that does not stop it from hosting some of the biggest parties in Europe. The city is known as the Gay Capital of Europe and is very open and accepting, with Pride flags scattered throughout the streets. During Carnival, they follow a motto of “anything goes” where there are “no rules” because this is a time to be free and party. This makes Sitges the perfect destination for the Debauchery Parade where thousands of people dance through the streets dressed in more risqué clothing. Sitges Carnival 2023 parade lasted about three hours because there were so many members of the community joining together to celebrate. While the people in the parade are dressed in the most exquisite colorful outfits, dressing up goes beyond those in the parade. It is very common for the people who come to watch the parade also dress up as their favorite animal or cartoon character. It is quite incredible to experience this shared moment of celebration and festivities!

What to wear to Sitges Carnival: feathers, glitter and more

As someone who had never experienced Carnival before, I came into this excursion to Sitges Carnival 2023 with zero expectations. I had attended and participated in parades at home in the United States, but Sitges took it to the next level. My number one recommendation if you are participating in Carnival is to fully experience the wonders of the festivity, you need to go all in. That’s right. Feathers. Glitter. Tutus. This is a celebration, after all, so dress for the occasion! If you do not have the proper attire, do not stress. I definitely was not prepared, but Sitges has so many little shops selling boas, face jewels and other fun accessories, so you can go all out with your Carnival look.

Exploring Sitges during Carnival 2023

Although dressing up for the parade is a huge part of the Sitges Carnival experience, the Debauchery Parade does not start until after sundown, so it was a great opportunity to explore the city which also means a trip to the beach. The beach in Sitges is a must because the sand is so soft and the water is so clear, which are two of the prime beach necessities. When we arrived, we made a little picnic on the beach which was the perfect start to the evening, watching the sunset before the parade started. There were also several dance groups performing along the beach before the start of the parade, which was also so fun to watch.

Experiencing the Debauchery Parade at Sitges Carnival 2023

When it was time for the Debauchery Parade to start, we worked our way toward the gates, so we could get the best view. I would definitely recommend getting there early or finding a spot more within the city because there were large crowds all trying to get as close as possible. Also, be prepared to stand for a bit because the Sitges Carnival 2023 parade was about three hours long. But it goes by very quickly because everyone is celebrating and having a great time. I loved how the people in the parade would interact with us, whether it be throwing confetti or integrating the guests into their parade skit. All the parade floats would have unique themes, including everything from Greek goddesses and punk rockers to Vikings and aliens. All the details were so intricate and creative, since everyone had matching costumes and a memorized dance routine. Truly, it was so special to experience so much joy among so many people in one moment. It was incredible being welcomed to celebrate such a meaningful tradition.
