In Catalonia in the fourth quarter of 2018, a total of 4,149 companies were created, 7.4% more than the same period in 2017. This makes it highest after Madrid, where 5,258 new businesses were created over the same time, a 6.9% increase. This is all according to figures published by the Colegio de Registradores this Tuesday.

This year-on-year growth of companies created in Catalonia contrasts with the 18.3% fall seen between the same period in 2016 and 2017 as a result of the independence process and pressure from Madrid.

Overall, the number of companies formed in Spain in 2018 reached 96,015, 1.1% more than the year before (94,998).

Despite this increase, which contrasts with the 7.2% reduction seen in 2017, today's figures show business creation remains under 100,000 per year.
