The number of international tourists who visited Catalonia during June was 2,029,711, an increase of 9.7% for the same month last year, according to the Statistics of Tourist Movements at the Borders (Frontur), published by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE) on Monday.

This means Catalonia has become the second territory of Spain receiving the most international tourists in June, with 24.1% of the total, behind the Balearic Islands (24.9% of the total). The majority of the tourists come from France (17.4%), second to the United Kingdom (14.1%). During the first half of the year, the number of foreign visitors has reached 8.64m, an increase of 10.3% over the same period of 2016.

From January to June, Catalonia has been the territory that has received the most international tourists, with a total of 8,644,565, ahead of the Canary Islands (6.9m) and the Balearic Islands (5.4m).

Tourists across Spain

In the whole of Spain, 8.4m tourists visited in June, 11.6% more than in February last year. Data from Frontur indicates that tourists who visited Spain most in June originated from the United Kingdom, reflecting 25.8% of the total, followed by Germany and France.

The airport is the route that has served the highest number of tourists in June, with more than 7.2m, representing an annual growth of 11.5%, with leisure, entertainment and vacations being the main motives for visiting Spain in June for more than 7.4m tourists.
